Nylon Hearth Rugs

Bacova Natural Northwoods Hearth Rug

The word nylon is most often associated with women's stockings, but nylon is a synthetic polymer used in a whole host of industrial applications. One of those applications is carpeting. Nylon rugs are the most popular floor coverings made from a synthetic material. Nylon rugs are durable, low-maintenance, and nearly as strong as wool.

A Brief History of Nylon
Nylon rugs weren't exactly what the DuPont Company had in mind when they began research into polymers in the early 1930s. Nylon was intended to be a synthetic replacement for silk, particularly the Asian silk used to manufacture parachutes for American soldiers in WWII. Though the word nylon was first used for women's stockings in 1940, nylon was primarily used for military applications until the war ended in 1945.

Benefits of Nylon Rugs
Since the 1940s, the many advantages of nylon have proven to be a perfect fit with the carpeting and rug industry. Area rugs and tufted carpets are commonly made from nylon. Nylon rugs are highly resistant to abrasion, crushing, and staining. Nylon rugs are usually manufactured to be static-resistant as well. Nylon holds up well under heavy foot traffic, and perhaps most importantly, it's less expensive than comparable natural materials.

All these qualities make nylon rugs a perfect match for nearly any room. Bath rugs and baby rugs are commonly made from nylon. Printed rugs are frequently made from nylon. Printed hearth rugs made from non-flammable nylon are colorful complements to your favorite fireplace. For durability, price, and design, nylon is the rug material to beat.
