Accent Rugs

Momeni Gul Sullivans Ivory GL-05 Oriental Rug

In speech, an accent is a distinctive form of expression. In music, accents emphasize particular notes. Accent rugs take both of these qualities and apply them to the world of home decor. Adding an accent rug to a room can emphasize decorative strengths or break up the monotony of a monochrome floor covering.

How to Use Accent Rugs
Accent rugs work best when they're used for a specific purpose. An accent rug is a very adaptable item, able to draw a room together or separate it into distinctive areas. Color and shape play important roles in both functions.

For example, a square, single color accent rug is ideal for breaking up a large dual-purpose room into visually distinct spheres. Accent rugs used for this purpose are especially effective in large living areas or studio apartments.

If your accent rug is intended to tie a room together, look for multi-colored rugs with more fluid lines. Dark-colored accent rugs will tend to give a room greater gravity (in both the literal and figurative senses of the word), while bright colors will draw attention to similarly colored furnishings or decorative accessories.

The Best Uses for Accent Rugs
Accent rugs don't necessarily need to be placed in large rooms. An accent rug will also alter one's perception of space, which is why accent rugs with bold colors or designs are great for dull entryways or hallways.

Transition and definition are an accent rug's fortes. Bold or subtle, imposing or abstract, accent rugs mean that surprises are always afoot.
